Junior Derby FAQs

Who can join?

Gotham Junior Roller Derby is open to cisgender, transgender and intersex girls and gender non-conforming participants 7 to 17 years old. We provide opportunities for skaters of all skill levels to learn and play in a fun, safe and supportive environment.

What gear is needed?

All participants are required to wear all of the following protective gear:

  • Helmet

  • Wristguards

  • Elbow pads

  • Knee pads

  • Mouth guard

  • 4-wheel (quad) roller skates

  • Athletic sneakers

Bring a big water bottle, and come dressed in athletic clothing.

Where are classes held?

Practices are held outdoors on the covered rink at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside Brooklyn.

Who are the coaches? Who will be at the classes?

Coaches are veteran Gotham skaters and coaches. They have all undergone background checks run by Protect Youth Sports.

We will have at least one CPR certified coach or league member available at each class, and there may be some additional skaters and/or league members to be a resource and answer any skater or parent questions.

can I BORROW skates and gear?

We also have a very limited amount of gear to lend out for new skaters. Sizes and availability are not guaranteed. Please contact jrderby@ggrd.nyc for more information. For committed skaters, we recommend ordering gear a few weeks in advance.

How will I know when I’m ready for contact?

GJRD makes sure that every skater is safe and feels ready before starting any contact drills. You won't be forced to do anything you don't feel comfortable with. Our Basics & Beginners classes are dedicated to learning basic skating form, basic skills like starts and stops, and safe falls. Coaches assess skills carefully to be sure that skaters have a solid foundation before participating in contact drills. Skaters progress at their own pace and there are opportunities for non contact or light contact play if you decide that contact is not for you.

Level 3 skaters aged 12 and older are eligible to tryout for our travel team. This team travels all over the country to play opponents in JRDA sanctioned competition.
